His story

It's been a while now since I've wanted to publish this post. It's been sitting in draft, but now I feel it's a good time to share it.  A journey that is close to my heart and a story that should be told, celebrated and used to inspire.

This journey is not my own, but I was honoured to be a part of it; a player, a contributor but not the lead role.  That honour goes to my husband.

This is his journey.  A journey that started about five years ago.

I noticed a change, ever so subtle at first, but a change non the less.  Sure our first born was about 18 months and I was newly pregnant with our second child, but I was still in tune with my husband enough to know that something was amiss.

At first he couldn't put his finger on it, but he felt agitated, restless and annoyed.  mostly at work.  He liked his job, but he no longer loved it, and his boss and the directors kept letting him down by saying he had good ideas to move the company forward but quite frankly they didn't want to explore them.

I kept asking him if he wanted to go out on his own.  quit his job and be his own boss.

Yeah. newly renovated home.  mortgage. one income.  not likely.

But I persisted with my idea, because I knew deep down his ideas were amazing, well thought out, niche business services that no one else was doing.   He had the skills, he just needed the confidence.   At first he thought he could wait until our kids were older and I could contribute financially to our income, not burdening his new business with such financial pressure.  I was sceptical he could hold out that long as I could see the agony in his face as he trod off to work each morning.  And honestly his ideas were so good it was only a matter of time before someone else got in first.  There were a million reasons not to give it a go, and only a few to take a leap of faith and do it.

After our second child was born, I sat him down and said "you are miserable, you hate your job.  quit now and start your own business. We will manage and you will succeed."

He wrote a business plan and quietly worked on it for the next few months.  We talked and talked and crunched numbers all day everyday.  When our baby daughter was three months old on Christmas Eve in 2008 he quit his job.  It was then that the Global Financial Crisis hit.  Great!  But that did not deter my husband.  He developed this no fear attitude. We never took out a business loan or overdraft.  It was just all hard work, late nights, finding the right clients and getting the job done no matter what. We adjusted to living without the security of a weekly wage, but getting at first invoice out, paid and in our account was pure sweet relief.  As time went on my husbands confidence grew, failure was not an option and as he would say he had 'the eye of the tiger'.  This was one fight he was going to be victorious.

For the next six months he worked out of the spare room of our house on a table from the op shop,  whilst I cared for our two kids at home also.  There were times I had to leave the house just so my husband could make a conference call without hearing kids screaming in the background.  Meetings were scheduled at a local cafe.   Now that seems like such a distant memory.

Flash forward to 2012 and my husband has three subsidiary businesses, employs 11 staff, and best of all is loving what he does.  I often forget the journey that he took...the sacrifices we made, the risk of losing it all.  But he did it.  Sometimes he muses that the fact that we did it at such a tough time was part of the reason why his business was successful.  There was simply no other option.

I am so proud and this journey he let me be apart of will a special story I will never tire of telling.

at the movies.....

It was hubby's birthday a few days ago!  Happy Birthday to you my gorgeous man.
As you know I love the idea of giving a handmade gift.....so I pondered.
 Until an idea struck when we got together with a group of close childhood friends.  You see,  there is always, always part of the conversation where they throw in a movie line, have a guess, and then chuckle with laughter.

It usually prompts more movie lines and before you know they are reciting the whole God Father to each other doing their best Marlon Brando!

So,  I put together a bit of a collection
of hubby's all time favourite movie quotes, and framed it.

Can you recognise any quotes?  Most, are from your typical action/mafia/thriller movies. I did have to ask for a bit help, not being so familiar with this genre.  You'll find a bit of The Godfather, Wogboy, Top Gun, Scarface and Rocky.  Needless to say, he loved it!

I had so much fun making it, that my mind started racing.....

So I did a girly version too.  All my favourite flicks.  The Notebook, Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman, When Harry met Sally, Pride and Prejiduce, Princess Bride and Titanic.

Side by side, they make a lovely pair.

And to steal a quote directly from my children

"I love you infinite days" my sweet husband

Do you have a favourite movie quote?
Do share?

Our wedding was lovely, sweet, simple and our promise was forever...

I'm grateful for.....{firsts}

Joining in today with ever delightful Maxabella Loves Grateful Link.

So, what am I grateful for....well, firsts - there has been a few this week...

1. First Concert - yep, my son has his first "concert" at Kinder on Friday.  I was the mother with the video camera* and a HUGE grin on my face, proud as punch that my conservative, reserved boy, sang carols and clapped and rang jingle bells on cue. That's a photo of him, up there, and he had quite a few wardrobe malfunctions with the reindeer headband, but he sailed through it!  So proud I could have burst!

2.  Going to a rock concert with my man - yep, tonight we are going to our first rock concert (together!)  we've been to several concerts separately, but tonight the in laws are taking care of the kiddies, we are dining out and heading off to see Bon Jovi - we are excited!!

3. Winning - yep, coming first is a good feeling!  my father-in-law and I won at a game of italian cards (scoopa) against my hubby and mother-in-law the other night.  I consider myself a novice at this game, so winning against my hubby is a good feeling!**

Grateful?  Of course you are for something - join in here...

*Seems like if you didn't have a video camera you were the odd one out, so i didn't feel so nerdy!
**During this card game, italian swear words are quite frequent and is really the only time I get boisterous and feisty in front of the in-laws - especially when one is competing against a very competitive husband!

The man I call Husband and who calls me Wife
Father to our children
that is you
lover, friend, rock and support.

Fantastic washer of dishes and
driver of vaccuum cleaner
with ambition and motivation
and uncanny ability to remember
when songs were released (month and year!)
and make up nick-names for everyone
I admire all that you are

Happy Birthday to you my love

Love us

Friday loves {the man and some lemons}

A few loves that I'm having at the moment!

1.  Lemons - perfect time for lemons right about now, and when I go for walks around my neighbourhood I see lemon trees filled to the brim with gorgeous plump lemons.  Luckily I have a few friends and relatives with such delightful trees and take as many as I can grab!  They are my favourite colour and I love the taste I've been known to slice and eat!  Yum yum yum!

{lemon slice}

2. Lemon recipes...

Ok so some of my favourite things to do with lemons;
 * Drink lemon cordial with a slice of lemon
 * Drink tonic water (and maybe some gin) with several slices of lemon

 * Make this awesome lemon slice
 * Eat these amazing pancake lemon muffins (believe me - they taste exactly like pancakes with sugar and lemon!!)

3.  The man.... My man to be exact - He's very special of course but this week his business website went live.  Two years ago (when our second child was all of 3 months old) my husband quit his job to start his own business.  He worked from home for the first six months, at times things got tough, then he found a great office space (3 minutes from home *bliss*) and now works with his business partner and bestie Steve and they've employed two others.  Proud of you my love and saying it loud!!

happy friday

flea market finds

Alas, the thrifting Gods did not shine on me this week (again!) although I have been pretty pre-occupied with my son's upcoming 4th birthday, so that may have something to do with it.  So whilst I sat down after a quiet weekend with my glass of red, seeing what thrifting finds you all have acquired, I stumbled across bountifully and admiring her newly purchased boy-robe and the mention of taking her hubby along with her on her op shopping adventures.

You see, this got me thinking about whether my hubby would come op-shopping with me!  My initial reaction was NO!  However, sheepishly I have to admit that two of my most favoured items have been thrifted by my dearest Husband.  So to pay homage to his efforts and as an excuse to join in this week I present to you two of his greatest finds....

One - a small little wooden jewellery box with mother of pearl detail he bought me at a second hand shop no longer running for $9

and this fab clock that he found on the side of the road and thought I might like (ahhh...i love it! was my response).
