flea market finds.....

It's been a while since I've been able to join in on this Sunday ritual - my thrifting mojo had taken a vacation, but on a little spontaneous visit to a Salvo's store with the kids yielded a few lovelies to report.

We wandered around, my son asking what we were doing in this shop.  I replied that we were simply looking for things that are nice.  We found a cute little white vase, this old fashion glass jar which the label on the bottom indicated that it once was sold with Apricot syrup.  I love its shape and the wire handle!

Then my son found this little wooden mushroom and upon inspection found that inside, was a smaller little mushroom with a little removable top too - the kids think it's fantastic.

The whole lot cost under $10!

One's mans trash is another man's treasure (or in this case, a woman's treasure!) and there is nothing like hunting around a junk shop, op shop or garage sale and spot a treasure in the distance, only to find out that the shop keeper or owner don't understand it's true beauty and value and have it listed at such a price that you just have to take it home...


but sometimes those places are filled with nothing that captures your eye and you leave empty handed AGAIN!!

Alas, this is when a girl can turn to Ebay, and hunt for random objects at her desire....
Two of my favourite vintage finds from the land of ebay are this cute little wooden plaque snapped up for $4

And this vintage barometer which was a little bit more (around $40 i think)

Perfect finds to adorn my wall next to this little plate of the dancing couple and clock!

Alas, the thrifting Gods did not shine on me this week (again!) although I have been pretty pre-occupied with my son's upcoming 4th birthday, so that may have something to do with it.  So whilst I sat down after a quiet weekend with my glass of red, seeing what thrifting finds you all have acquired, I stumbled across bountifully and admiring her newly purchased boy-robe and the mention of taking her hubby along with her on her op shopping adventures.

You see, this got me thinking about whether my hubby would come op-shopping with me!  My initial reaction was NO!  However, sheepishly I have to admit that two of my most favoured items have been thrifted by my dearest Husband.  So to pay homage to his efforts and as an excuse to join in this week I present to you two of his greatest finds....

One - a small little wooden jewellery box with mother of pearl detail he bought me at a second hand shop no longer running for $9

and this fab clock that he found on the side of the road and thought I might like (ahhh...i love it! was my response).

I love joining in on this little Sunday ritual of sharing our treasures that have been given a second chance and loved for all their imperfections and history.  However this week proved to be difficult as, although I had a couple of visits to some local thrift stores, I walked away empty handed. I even visited my favourite antique/furniture restorer (as I happened to passing by) and yes, I did fall in love with half of the items there - especially a gorgeous wooden and tapestry firescreen, a matching pair of church pews and some quaint little art deco drawers that were just too cute - but they are not the type of items to buy on a whim! 

So although I purchased nothing this week, I thought I would share with you my ever first flea market find when I moved out of home many many years ago.  And of course it is practical.  I was at a local trash and treasure and spotted this little casserole dish and snapped it up for about $5.  It has been used, well as a casserole dish, a fruit bowl and an onion bowl just to name a few.  It has survived three house moves and I still use it today and  love it!

flea market finds

My entry is a little late as it took me several attempts at finally laying out my find and taking some photos.  Albeit these photos aren't the best as there was dappled light on the dining table, but I wanted to wash and hang them out to dry whilst the gorgeous Autumn sun is out.

I found these during the week at a local op shop and aren't they sweet -  a little stash of cross-stitched napkins, doilies, and runners and was just so excited I knew I had to have them.  I know what I want to do with a few of them, but the other's will just have to wait until I find the perfect project for them.

I love the colours and the detail in the stitching - a lot of work has gone into these little crafts and I want to bring them back to life. I think I scored this batch for under $10!!!

flea market finds

I found this little treasure about a month ago, in the window of a small little op shop.  My son had noticed a  Miffy Book in one of the baskets near the door and as I was getting out my 20 cents to pay for the book I spotted it! A beautiful cake plate.  I thought it would be great to take along to markets to display my stock.   I told the lovely lady to pop it away and I would collect it on my way back to car.  So it's been sitting on my dining room table for a little while now and I just hadn't got around to taking a picture of it, but seeing as I made some yummy cupcakes this weekend, it was a perfect photo opportunity.

I set out this morning to do a bit of garage-sale hopping in the hope to find some props that I can use in my up coming markets but instead was getting disappointed as i left each one empty handed.  I had one more left on my list and I contemplated not going and heading home, but I went and at first I didn't notice the two of them just sitting there, and they were piled with toys, pillows and a very pregnant owner sitting on one.  She got up to assist someone else with a sale and I had a closer look.  I took a seat (oh how comfortable).  I quickly looked for a price - nothing, so I casually walked over to very pregnant lady.
"How much are you selling those chairs for?" (i bet they are over my budget)
"Um...$15 each"
(me squealling on the inside - calm down - poker face!)
"Oh, i see"  I say glancing back over pretending to contemplating whether they are worth that much!
"I'll give you $20 for both" I say, toddler on hip.
"Oh I don't know.."
"$25 then."
"Ok!"

 They are beautiful and with a bit of sprucing up with a clean and some new cushion covers they will come up a treat!  There is no original label so I don't know what year or who made them but they are sturdy, comfy and all the springs are still in great condition. Very Danish Parker style, which will go nicely with my dining room Eiffel chairs.  I can use the existing covers as a pattern for the new ones - now i just have to decide what fabric!  Probably something from Ink and Spindle that will match my new couch cushions i made yesterday! check out the perhaps original fabric used when I took of the current cover!
