The Fairy Party

Our little girl with the big brown eyes

you have now turned four, wow how time flies 

I remember, a babe in my arms

you captured our souls with your wonderous charm

A bright little spark, you make this family sing

And here is the much anticipated Fairy Party! A little group of awe-struck miniture fairies captivated by a "real" fairy and her magical, amazing performance.  

A selection of fairy food (mainly fairy bread, strawberried dipped in white chocolate and covered in sprinkles, hot food included home made sausage rolls, the staples like chocy crackles and savoury sandwiches and of course the cake!   A Women's Weekly Birthday Cake book selection which never turns out like it does in the book, but this little lopsided mushroom cake fitted the theme of a fairyland party and in the end was fun to make! Although my little marshmellow mushrooms wouldn't play fair and kept toppling over!!! 

The Birthday Girl in all her party glory truely had a great party.  Dress made a few weeks back here.

my creative space {party hats}

Once a party is decided upon...all that be discussed is the making part of it. You make a list of the guests, you make the invites, you make a list of the games, the entertainment, a list of food that needs to be prepared, the cake that needs to be baked and the all important goodie bags, and decorations.

This week we tackled the party hats.  No store bought party hats here...on no sir-ee!  So I searched high and low through my craft room and was determined that it could be achieved without buying a thing.

Here is what you'll need to make your own fabric party hats.

• - A template (use an existing party hat or download one from here)
• - Some sturdy paper - I used some scrap 200gsm paper which was great at holding it's shape
• - hot glue gun and heaps of glue
• - fabric in whatever you choose 
• - hat elastic
• - stapler 
• - decorations....it's whatever goes.  Leave them plain or jazz them up with buttons, ribbons, yo-yo's lace and any other trim you want. 

To get started...

• Cut out your template and then all your paper and fabric leaving a good seam allowance for glueing 
• Next warm up your glue gun and place your paper on the wrong side of the fabric and edge the paper with the hot glue.  Being careful not to burn yourself, glue the fabric to the whole paper.  Then glue along one straight side of the fabric at and twist it into a cone shaped hat.  Sit aside and let dry whilst your doing the others. 
• Cut lengths of hat elastic and tie a knot in each end.  Staple to the side of the hat ensuring that you staple under the knot. 

• The next bit is the fun stuff....decorate as you wish and have heaps of fun trying them on and enjoying the party spirit!

It's been a whirlwind of buntings, cake making, present wrapping, and the sorts... It's amazing what inspiration you can find on the web to help create a handmade party atmosphere....

Today was my little daughters 2nd Birthday Party with a few of her friends...
And once the invitations were sent, a carnival theme emerged...

I got an idea for decorating the cake from Cathy (who is also going through a bit of a bunting obsession!!)

I did a bit of research on Carnival Themes and Martha Stewart's Blog had some great idea's like this popcorn stand - which is just paper cones (or you could use party hats) filled with popcorn and placed in holes a cardboard box.

Little people came and had a wonderful time - here is some fruit filled cups on my cup-cake stand!

And delightful gifts were received.  My friend has just begun crafting and made this gorgeous hair clip organiser which will be very useful.

And a cute miniture tea-set with it's own basket from my lovely friend here 

I also wanted to show the gift received from my Aunty.   She made this for my son when it was his Birthday - My daughter received a cross stitch equally stunning!

Birthday girl receiving her gifts - a few books and some lovely handmade lovelies (and yes she is wearing Lightening McQueen pj's - just like her big brother!) 

A gorgeous Madamoiselle doll from Steph at Mon Petit Poppet was given a warm hug and kissed and given special privilege in her cot during nap time. 

And getting stuck into her fold away fabric carry house - which was brought along with us to playgroup this morning. 

A cake has been baked and decorated

A bunting or two made

some games prepared

and balloons to blow up

A little party will be had to celebrate this milestone tomorrow...

At my house .....

Birthday preparations are a plenty in our house right now.... the list just keeps going and I was overly delighted when I found my husband preparing our dinner at 8am this morning so that I didn't have to worry about it (adorable LOML!!)  and could focus on other pressing issues....

I worked most of last night on a little fabric, fold away carry house which will be a present for her 2nd Birthday.  I started it on the weekend when my mum was staying with us for a few days so it was great to have the advantage of an extra pair of hand cutting fabric and wadding and especially when it came to deciphering the instructions and working out how it would piece together. It's not yet finished but the hard stuff is done, I just have to stitch some walls in place!

Today we've collected a few little treasures that will make up some party favours...

And I had to share this most adorable cup-cake tier from the Robert Gordon range - a bargin addition at only $14!  My accidental carnival theme party is taking shape!

This afternoon my son and I might make some more pompoms and sneak in a game of snap!

wardrobe wednesday

I cannot remember the last time I made myself an item of clothing....

this week, whilst making a skirt, my certain quirks regarding sewing for myself came flooding back....

regardless of what I am sewing, I have certain quirks, and laugh at myself, and often my husband will  shake his head in amusement - thinking "what are you doing??"

You see, I can't sew wearing shoes or slippers on my 'sewing foot' - that is, the foot that is controlling the pedal!  oh, no it has  to be as close to skin on metal (or plastic??) as possible - perhaps a sock, but sometimes not even, and in the cooler months when the chilly breeze is seeping through the cracks of our old floor boards, I am sure that I come close to loosing all feeling in my right foot and possibly suffering from frost bite (ok not quite frost bite, but you get my drift) as I parade around limping with one slipperless foot...

And so, as I enjoy cutting up fabric that will eventually be turned into an item of recognisable clothing, I again embark on a journey quirks as rarely am I able to settle on 'one pattern' as I feel compelled to 'create my own - as i go along' type of thing - which involves lots of 'trying the garment on' at various stages of production - which means, in this case, I end up wearing very little, standing next to the iron madly pressing seams, pinning hems all with one slipper on....

"honey - have you closed the blind in that front room?? - because the neighbours can see you!"
"ha - oops" - i say!

and so the stripy high-waisted skirt that i spied in a catalogue and admired,  is now finished!  Final price was about $11 for the fabric and I already had a black zip and I used little snap fasteners to close the band (which I thought about covering with buttons, but I like it as is, i think!).  It might not be exactly like the extravagant expensive version, but I am content with this little number!

We are off to a little girls 4th birthday party today, so perhaps I'll just stay as I am, as I feel dressed up to party, although I'll play around with with cardigan I settle on as I have a grey one i like...

Happy Birthday!!!

 (2 days old)

Today my son turns 4!  Where did the time go? is the question me and husband asked ourselves last night as I worked on his cake for two hours!!! We remember bringing him home from hospital, first time parents, amazed at what we had created and then sat, the three of us in the lounge room, looked at each other....(both of us were thinking "what now??")

The last four years have been amazing, to say the least.  Watching you grow, nurturing you, teaching and experiencing the wonders of this world with you has been a joy and delight.  You have taught us so much and you are our greatest gift.  You are compassionate and kind, caring and thoughtful, inquisitive and have a zest for life that is infectious.   Happy Birthday my sweet son!

                                       

The cake took longer to decorate than first anticipated and I am glad I waited for the little ones to be in bed before I began as it was tedious and messy.  The ready made icing was so sloppy that I needed to add so much extra icing sugar just to get it to a consistency to roll with a rolling pin.  We deciding on a green number four instead of red, as last year my attempt to make red icing ended up looking a little pink and I wasn't sure how that would be received by the birthday boy! I was lucky enough to find the little traffic decorations at Go-Lo for $3.  All in all, i was happy with how it turned out and so was the birthday boy when he laid eyes of it this morning asking if he could eat it for breakfast!

He was so surprised to see balloons already blown up, and a few little presents waiting for him in the lounge room.  The best reaction was when he saw his new sign!

I'm off to prepare some food for our little guests and also some activities that they will be doing (like decorating their own biscuit, designing a jigsaw puzzle and pass the parcel!)
