my creative space {baby Samina}

A few weeks ago our dear friends welcomed their second daughter, Samina into the world.  We knew in advance that they were having a girl so I started working on a baby quilt for her.

And a bunting.

There's no pattern.  I just made it up as I went...using scraps for the top part - all little random panels sewn together. A vibrant pattern for the middle section and then a plan block colour for the third section. Backed with some Amy Butler dot fabric and edged in a cute floral geometric print.

I haven't been to see Samina yet...but I've seen photos and of course is adorable!

There is nothing quite as precious as a newborn in the family and it's lovely to be able to make something handmade as her first gift from us.

Do you love making things for newborns?  If so, do you have something special you tend to make?  I love the idea of babes using this quilt to lay on, roll around, carry around the house or snuggle up with a book.

It's been a while since I joined in with Creative Spaces, so I can't wait to see what you all have been up to....and if you're new...join in here at Village Voices.

a birthday bunting

A few weeks ago, my foodie loving, baking queen extraordinaire, gorgeous looking, and down right awesome friend celebrated her birthday.  The lovely thing is that a few weeks prior we happened to laugh at the ridiculous apron she was using (oh if you had of seen it!)  and my mind started racing....

.....then there was then some mention of a cute kitchen bunting that was admired somewhere in blogland...

.....and my mind started racing again.  If you recall - last year, I made this after some discussion about how cute crocheted cushions were!

Well, with a thrifted vintage tea towel with the most gorgeous colours and beautiful bird print, some other retro inspired fabrics, a splash of doilies here and there and voila!  One custom made Apron and matching Kitchen Bunting!

The tea towel was large enough to use as pockets on the apron (those lovely birds weren't going to get cut up!) and the rest made part of the bunging.  I also struck it lucky at an op shop - a vintage Johnson plate!

Do you love making special gifts?  I do!  Especially a practical gift like an apron that will get used over and over!!!

my creative space...

It's been a whirlwind of buntings, cake making, present wrapping, and the sorts... It's amazing what inspiration you can find on the web to help create a handmade party atmosphere....

Today was my little daughters 2nd Birthday Party with a few of her friends...
And once the invitations were sent, a carnival theme emerged...

I got an idea for decorating the cake from Cathy (who is also going through a bit of a bunting obsession!!)

I did a bit of research on Carnival Themes and Martha Stewart's Blog had some great idea's like this popcorn stand - which is just paper cones (or you could use party hats) filled with popcorn and placed in holes a cardboard box.

Little people came and had a wonderful time - here is some fruit filled cups on my cup-cake stand!

And delightful gifts were received.  My friend has just begun crafting and made this gorgeous hair clip organiser which will be very useful.

And a cute miniture tea-set with it's own basket from my lovely friend here

I also wanted to show the gift received from my Aunty.   She made this for my son when it was his Birthday - My daughter received a cross stitch equally stunning!

Thanks for all the birthday wishes

my creative space...

ahhh....today has been one of those days (i know and its only just lunch time).  My son bit his lip yesterday, so eating is difficult (and painful).  I was feeling like Mother Hubbard (with cupboards bare) this morning so quickly made and list and thought a trip to the Supermarket might break up the morning.  My son was still in pyjama's at 10.30am so my idea of betting the rush was squashed, not to mention the fact that once we did finally get there I realised it was Pension Day!  Argghhhh!  A lady driving very close to the curb gave me a foul look thinking I was going to hit her car with my trolley (yeah sure!) and then I get home to realise that I am two loaves of sliced bread short!  A quick check of my shopping receipt calms me somewhat as I realise I didn't even pay for them - they must have just been forgotten on the check out counter!  Still annoying!

So when I got home and let the fury go, I thought I would finish and then photograph some little paper buntings that I have been working on.  I love sewing with paper and they look really cute hanging up in my daughters room, that I may have to make her one...

I have been trying to think and create some fun items to stock at my next market which will be at Woodend at the Sugar and Spice Market, so along with these buntings, I might make some with a range of different shapes - like garlands of circles joined together - oh the possibilities are endless!  Ah...now I am feeling better!
